Meta has AI assistants. Google has Ask Advisor. Amazon has Ads Agent. TikTok is building agentic workflows.
The interface between marketer and ad platform is being rewritten. This introduces the natural-language / agent interface theme without drowning the reader in product names.

PAID MEDIA IS LEARNING TO RUN ITSELF

THE TAKE
AI is moving beyond campaign recommendations. Platforms are increasingly able to build, optimize, & execute campaigns with less human intervention.

THE SHIFT: The shift isn’t simply toward better automation. It’s toward agentic systems that can make and execute decisions across the campaign lifecycle.

Meta, Google, Amazon, TikTok and others are racing to automate more of the work that once sat with media teams.

WHAT IT MEANS
There is a big difference between AI adjusting a bid and AI changing a campaign. The easiest way to understand the new ad-tech race is by asking one question:

The further AI moves from recommending → creating → acting, the more control moves from the media buyer to the system.

❝

If small and medium businesses can already go directly to automated media buying, what happens when large advertisers do the same?

❝

What’s next: The frontier begins when AI stops simply optimizing decisions and starts receiving permission to make them.
THE MACHINE IS MOVING UP THE DECISION STACK

THE PLATFORMS AREN’T AUTOMATING THE SAME JOB

That boundary is moving
Platforms can now generate creative, discover audiences, interpret intent, build campaigns and recommend changes. Some AI agents can even make account changes once permission is granted.

❝

On the floor:

Amazon has moved further into execution.
Google is turning campaign management into a conversation:
TikTok’s Smart+ automates campaign setup & optimization, while
Symphony Agent focuses heavily on generating and scaling platform
Meta’s Advantage+ increasingly automates targeting, bidding, placements and creative optimization

SAME DESTINATION - DIFFERENT ROUTES.

The common direction is clear: advertisers are giving platforms more of the campaign workflow. The competition is no longer just about who has the best algorithm. It is about who can own the largest share of the marketer’s decision loop.

❝

“I thought it was just noise,” “Turns out it’s the hook.”

What’s next:

Advantage+ already automates much of targeting, bidding, placements and delivery. Instead of asking advertisers to define every audience manually, Meta increasingly uses its own prediction systems to decide who is most likely to respond.

Opinion:
META’S EDGE ISN’T SEARCH INTENT. IT’S PREDICTION.
Meta starts with what people watch, click, engage with and buy. That makes Meta’s path to automation fundamentally different.

What Changed:
GOOGLE IS TURNING SEARCH INTO A CONVERSATION
AI Max can expand beyond exact keywords, adapt ad copy and choose a different landing page when Google believes it better matches intent.
Ask Advisor takes this further by letting marketers question performance in natural language and approve certain campaign changes.

What got made:
AMAZON IS MOVING FROM MEDIA PLAN TO EXECUTION
Amazon has something the other platforms don’t - an enormous amount of commerce context.
PERFORMANCE+
Amazon is automating more of the journey from audience selection to performance optimisation.

What’s next:
TIKTOK WANTS TO AUTOMATE THE CONTENT MACHINE
SMART+
Automates campaign setup and performance optimisation.
GMV MAX
Uses available creative and automated delivery to optimise toward commerce outcomes.
SYMPHONY AI
tools help turn prompts, trends, products and creator inputs into TikTokready content.
SYMPHONY AGENT
The newer direction is more agentic: discover trends, develop concepts and help keep the creative pipeline moving.

THE AD PLATFORM IS BECOMING AN AI INTERFACE

Microsoft and OpenAI point toward another layer: advertising managed through conversation, and eventually connected agents.

MICROSOFT AI MAX Expands search-term matching, personalises ad assets and can route users to more relevant URLs.

COPILOT Microsoft is building conversational AI into advertising workflows for analysis, troubleshooting and creative assistance.

ChatGPT Ads now has a self-serve Ads Manager beta and AI-powered creative tools.

SPONSORED AGENTS are being tested: a person can move from an ad into a conversation with an AI representative of the business.

❝

The Signal
SIX PLATFORMS.
SIX DIFFERENT BETS.

The AI advertising race isn 't converging on one product. Each platform is trying to own a different part of the decision.
  • META AUDIENCE + DELIVERY
Find the people. Decide where the budget works.

  • GOOGLE INTENT + SEARCH
Interpret what the person is asking for.

  • AMAZON COMMERCE + EXECUTION
Connect advertising decisions to shopping behaviour and campaign operations.

  • TIKTOK CREATIVE + DISCOVERY
Keep generating things people want to watch — and buy.

  • MICROSOFT SEARCH + AI INTERFACE
Bring advertising into increasingly conversational search.

  • OPENAI CONVERSATION + AGENTS
Move the ad closer to an AI-mediated buying conversation.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN EVERY MAJOR AD PLATFORM HAS AN AGENT?
And the uncomfortable question:
WHAT DOES A MARKETER ACTUALLY CONTROL WHEN THE MACHINES CONTROL THE MEDIA?
