WHAT HAPPENED?

Microsoft Advertising made AI Max for Search generally available on August 27.

It adds three AI-powered capabilities to standard Search campaigns:

  • Search term matching

  • Text customization

  • Final URL expansion

Microsoft says the system uses keywords, ads, landing pages and other contextual signals to find relevant searches, including longer conversational queries.

1. WHAT MICROSOFT ACTUALLY CHANGED

Microsoft has launched AI Max for Search, giving standard Search campaigns more automation around matching, ad copy and landing pages.

Advertisers can also use:

  • Broader search matching

  • Automatic text customization

  • Final URL expansion

  • More search-term visibility

  • More Performance Max controls

For ecommerce advertisers, product feeds can supply structured information such as product titles, images, pricing and availability to create ads from the catalog.

Microsoft is giving Search campaigns more freedom, so advertisers need to watch what the system is choosing.

2. WHY IT MATTERS FOR ADVERTISERS

The important shift is simple:

Microsoft is following the same structural shift appearing in Google Search.

The platform increasingly wants more than a keyword.

It wants to understand:

The query.
The website.
The creative.
The conversion signal.

That gives the system more freedom to decide when an advertiser is relevant.

But Microsoft is also putting reporting and controls around that automation.

While AI-driven matching unlocks incremental search demand you never explicitly targeted, control ultimately belongs to the advertiser who audits the machine's choices against real business profit.

3. Here’s an Explainer!

Imagine a software company targeting:

“CRM for small business.”

A Copilot user instead asks:

“Which CRM works for a 20-person sales team that needs Outlook integration?”

AI Max can use the company's landing pages, keywords and ad content to decide whether that longer intent is relevant, even if the exact query was never in the keyword list.

THE SIGNAL

4. WHAT ADVERTISERS SHOULD DO

Test AI Max through an experiment rather than judging it from account-wide averages.

Watch:

Incremental conversions, search terms, generated assets and landing-page selection.

Also review brand and term exclusions before increasing spend.

The question is not whether AI Max finds more traffic.

It is whether it finds better incremental demand.

ORBIT. TODAY’s TAKE

Google does not have a monopoly on automated Search anymore.

Microsoft now wants its AI deciding more of the query, message and destination too.

The Search campaign is becoming less of a keyword list and more of a set of instructions for the machine.
