WHAT HAPPENED THIS WEEK?

This week:

OpenAI made ChatGPT Ads look more like a measurable performance channel.

Google started building ads around conversational intent rather than only the keyword.

Meta pushed AI further into creative, product selection and campaign management.

TikTok combined automated media buying with an expanding generative-creative system.

Amazon went furthest: Alexa+ Agentic Ads can help a customer move from seeing an offer to completing the transaction inside the same conversation.

Advertising platforms are trying to own more of the journey between “I want something” and “I bought it.”

1. THE OLD CAMPAIGN IS GETTING COMPRESSED

What changed

Week ending September 12, 2026 — OpenAI, Google, Meta, Amazon and TikTok all pushed AI deeper into the advertising workflow. ChatGPT Ads added more performance infrastructure; Google expanded conversational ad experiences; Meta and TikTok automated more creative and campaign execution; Amazon showed ads that can help complete a transaction inside Alexa+.

Why it matters

Advertisers have been treating feeds, creative systems, conversion data and brand rules as things that support media buying. They are increasingly becoming the media-buying inputs themselves. When the platform chooses more of the audience, asset, product, placement and next action, the part you still control moves further upstream.

What the operator should do/watch

Audit the inputs your platforms are now making decisions from: product data, conversion signals, creative supply, offers, exclusions and brand rules. Then watch whether more automation improves business outcomes — CPA, incremental revenue and customer quality, rather than simply increasing platform-reported conversions.

The platform is taking more of the funnel, so the inputs you still own are becoming more valuable.

3. THE CLICK IS LOSING SOME OF ITS IMPORTANCE

For years, digital advertising revolved around moving someone somewhere.

Complete the form.

Buy the thing.

Amazon's agentic ads show what happens when some of those steps collapse into the advertising experience itself.

Google's AI Mode points in a similar direction from discovery: the answer, recommendation and sponsored option increasingly live together.

That does not mean the landing page disappears.

But it does mean the landing page may no longer be the mandatory centre of every customer journey.

And if that happens, advertisers will need to care more about completed outcomes and less about intermediate actions that used to define performance.

CTR may still matter.

But a system that can answer, recommend and transact makes “What did the customer actually complete?” the more interesting question.

ORBIT’s TAKE

WHAT THIS DOES NOT MEAN

Keywords are not dead.

Landing pages are not dead.

Media buyers are not dead.

And AI is not suddenly capable of running every advertising account without supervision.

The more precise conclusion is less dramatic:

Platforms are gradually automating the execution layer of advertising.

That pushes more strategic responsibility toward the inputs, objectives and constraints advertisers give them.

THE SIGNAL

The pattern behind the week

This week wasn't really about five AI product launches.

It was about the advertising platform expanding its job description.

Google wants to understand the intent.

Meta and TikTok want to build and distribute more of the creative.

OpenAI wants to optimize against the outcome.

Amazon wants to complete the transaction.

The ad platform used to deliver the message. Increasingly, it wants to understand the customer, build the campaign, make the decision and finish the job.
