THE SHIFT

Search is getting longer. Google says queries in AI Mode average three times the length of traditional searches. Now the company is expanding ads in AI Mode to Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In the U.S., it is also launching ads that can appear in follow-up questions.

That makes this more than a new placement. A person may describe a need, compare options, and refine the request across several turns before choosing. The ad opportunity is moving closer to that decision process.

What Google announced

Google’s October 28 update says ads are scaling to ten additional countries, with Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom planned for Q4 2026. It also says U.S. advertisers will begin seeing “multiturn” ads in follow-up queries. Google says ads will be labeled “Sponsored.” Those are the company’s stated plans; availability and formats can vary as rollout continues.

For buyers in India and the other newly included markets, the immediate task is to check campaign eligibility and reporting in the account. For everyone else, this is a useful preview of how conversational search inventory may develop.

Keywords still matter. Context matters more.

Traditional search planning often starts with a query list and a landing page for each intent. A conversational journey can reveal the constraints behind the query: budget, compatibility, location, timing, or a preference the person only states in a follow-up. An ad may be relevant because it fits the evolving need, not because it repeats the first phrase.

That puts more weight on clear product data, useful landing pages, and offers that make sense at different stages of consideration. It also makes generic copy easier to expose: if the user has described a specific problem, an ad that says only “learn more” may feel like an interruption.

Three checks for search teams

  • Confirm where delivery is live. Separate announced markets from actual impressions in your own account. Don’t shift budget on the basis of a rollout headline.

  • Review the destination. Make sure product, price, eligibility, and availability information is current and consistent with what the ad promises.

  • Set a baseline before expanding. Track spend, qualified actions, conversion quality, and the query or placement reporting available to you. Compare those outcomes with your existing search campaigns, not just with platform-reported clicks.

Google says click-through rates for sponsored and organic product lists in AI Mode are similar, based on its own U.S. data from August 20 to September 3. That is an early platform-reported signal, not a forecast for every advertiser or market.

Copy this into your campaign planning doc and fill it in before you expand spend.

  • Market / campaign: [country, campaign, product]

  • Customer need: [problem or question the offer solves]

  • Proof on the landing page: [price, availability, compatibility, or other key detail]

  • Baseline: [spend, qualified conversions, conversion quality, date range]

  • Expansion rule: [what evidence would justify more budget]

  • Review date / owner: [date and name]

This is a copy-and-use planning aid; verify placement eligibility and reporting in your account.

ORBIT’S TAKE

AI Mode could make search ads feel less like a list of links and more like recommendations inside a conversation. The strategic response is not to invent an “AI Mode” budget before you can measure it. Get your feed and landing pages in order, verify where you can actually serve, and watch for evidence that the new placement produces customers you would not otherwise have reached.
