WHAT HAPPENED?

OpenAI is taking ChatGPT Ads beyond sponsored placements with Sponsored Agents, AI creative tools, ChatGPT Work, and HubSpot and Shopify integrations.

This week, three developments point in the same direction.

OpenAI is building more of the infrastructure advertisers expect from a serious media platform. Amazon is extending its ad campaigns into ChatGPT. And Amazon’s clash with Meta shows that AI agents could eventually change who controls the shopping journey.

A click no longer has to mean “go to the landing page.”

It can now mean “start a conversation with the advertiser.”

WHAT HAPPENED?

The important shift is simple: ChatGPT is starting to combine discovery, advertising and product explanation in the same environment.

Traditional paid media normally hands the user off.

The ad creates interest. The website answers questions. The landing page tries to convert the traffic.

Sponsored Agents can move part of that middle stage into ChatGPT.

A consumer could see an ad for a software platform, open the agent and ask:

  • Will this work with my current setup?

  • Which plan is right for my team?

  • What does this actually cost?

That matters because advertisers are no longer dealing only with the quality of the click.

They may also be dealing with the quality of the interaction after the click.

That changes what optimisation could eventually look like.

Creative still matters.

Landing pages still matter.

But product information, conversational answers and the transition from chat to conversion may become part of the media experience too.

❝

This still does not make ChatGPT Ads as mature as Google Ads or Meta Ads.

It does make it measurable enough to run a serious performance test.

WHY IT MATTERS FOR ADVERTISERS

The real opportunity is not simply another source of traffic.

It is whether conversation can improve the space between “I’m interested” and “I’m ready to buy.”

If it can, advertisers may start treating the conversational experience as another conversion surface.

ORBIT’s TAKE

Here’s an Explainer!

Imagine a footwear retailer already spending heavily on Google and Meta.

It launches a hypothetical £20,000 ChatGPT Ads test for running shoes.

A user is asking ChatGPT what type of shoe is best for marathon training.

A relevant ad appears.

Instead of immediately sending the user to a product page, the advertiser’s Sponsored Agent opens a conversation.

The shopper asks:

“I overpronate and run about 40km a week. Which shoe should I look at?”

The agent explains the difference between three suitable products.

The user then clicks through to buy.

Now imagine the campaign records a hypothetical £55 CPA, compared with £48 on paid search.

That does not automatically mean ChatGPT is performing worse.

The advertiser still needs to ask:

Are these customers incremental?

Are they new to the brand?

Did the conversation improve conversion quality?

Does CPA hold when spend increases?

Did ChatGPT assist conversions that were later credited elsewhere?

THE SIGNAL
WHAT ADVERTISERS SHOULD DO

First, fix measurement before scaling.

Make sure purchases, qualified leads or other meaningful conversion events are properly connected. Activity inside ChatGPT is not enough. Advertisers need to know whether it creates real business outcomes.

Second, keep ChatGPT reporting separate.

Do not immediately blend it into paid search, display or paid social reporting. Conversational intent behaves differently, so it deserves its own benchmark for CPA, conversion rate, customer quality and new-customer rate.

Third, start with products that need explanation.

Sponsored Agents make more sense where customers naturally ask questions before buying.

Think software, travel, electronics, financial products, education or higher-consideration ecommerce.

The more complicated the decision, the more useful the conversation may become.

Fourth, optimise the information behind the ad.

If AI is answering questions on behalf of the business, advertisers need to pay attention to product information, pricing, specifications, landing pages and connected feeds.

The creative may generate the click.

The information may determine whether that click turns into a customer.

ORBIT. TODAY’s TAKE

ChatGPT Ads started as another place to show sponsored messages.

Now OpenAI is building more of the infrastructure around it: campaign tools, CRM connections, ecommerce feeds and conversational ad experiences.

That is what makes this update important.

The bigger change is not simply that ChatGPT has ads.

It is that the advertising journey itself could become more conversational.

For advertisers, the next question is no longer only:

“Can ChatGPT generate clicks?”

It is:

“Can the conversation after the click help generate better customers?”

That is when ChatGPT starts looking like a real paid media channel.
