WHAT HAPPENED?

OpenAI is turning ChatGPT Ads into a much more conventional, and therefore much more usable, paid-media platform.
Amazon Ads has partnered with OpenAI to let selected U.S. advertisers extend Amazon Ads campaigns into ChatGPT. The integration is currently in pilot, with Delta Vacations named as one of the first brands testing it. Amazon says the aim is to help advertisers reach users while they explore options, compare choices and make decisions inside ChatGPT.
A click no longer has to mean “go to the landing page.”
It can now mean “start a conversation with the advertiser.”
WHY IT MATTERS FOR ADVERTISERS

The important shift is simple: ChatGPT is starting to combine discovery, advertising and product explanation in the same environment.
That makes ChatGPT different from standard retail media inventory.
On Amazon, a shopper may already be searching for a product.
Inside ChatGPT, they may still be defining the problem.
Someone could ask:
“Where should I go for a warm family holiday in February?”
“Which laptop is best for video editing under 1,987.58?”
“What CRM should a small sales team use?”
These are not necessarily product searches.
They are decision-making moments.
Amazon says its advertising business combines programmatic technology with browsing, shopping and streaming signals, while the new integration allows campaigns to extend into ChatGPT inventory.
The advertiser opportunity is therefore less about simply adding more impressions.
It is about gaining access to a different stage of consumer intent.
ORBIT’S TAKE
Amazon’s advertising advantage has traditionally been strongest close to purchase.
ChatGPT could move Amazon Ads further up the decision journey — into the point where consumers are still researching, comparing and deciding what they actually want.
HERE’S AN EXPLAINER!

The important shift is simple:
Imagine a travel company already running campaigns through Amazon Ads.
It wants to sell Caribbean holiday packages.
Normally, the advertiser might reach people through display, video or other programmatic inventory.
Now it adds ChatGPT Ads to the mix.
A user asks ChatGPT:
“Where can a family of four go in February for warm weather without a very long flight?”
During that research process, an eligible ad from the travel company appears.
The customer has not searched for the brand.
They may not even have decided on a destination yet.
The advertiser has entered the journey before the brand search happens.
Now imagine the hypothetical results look like this:
Standard DSP activity: $110 CPA
ChatGPT Ads: $130 CPA
At first glance, ChatGPT looks more expensive.
But that is not enough to judge the channel.
The advertiser should ask:
Are these customers new to the brand?
Would they have converted through another channel anyway?
Does ChatGPT influence later paid-search or direct conversions?
Is average booking value different?
Does performance hold when spend increases?
Instead of asking whether the platform is interesting, advertisers can start asking whether it produces acceptable CPA, ROAS and customer quality.
That is when a new advertising product starts becoming a real media channel.
THE SIGNAL
WHAT ADVERTISERS SHOULD DO

First, keep ChatGPT inventory separate in reporting.
Do not blend early tests into a wider Amazon Ads campaign total. Advertisers need a clear view of CPA, conversion rate, new-customer rate and assisted conversions from this inventory specifically.
Second, compare it with upper- and mid-funnel activity, not only retail search.
ChatGPT users may be earlier in the buying journey. A direct comparison with high-intent retail search can make the channel look weaker even when it is doing a different job.
Third, test categories where research matters.
Travel, software, automotive, electronics, finance and other considered purchases are stronger candidates because consumers naturally ask questions and compare alternatives before buying.
Fourth, validate incrementality before scaling.
If ChatGPT simply captures users who would have converted through Amazon, Google or direct traffic anyway, the extra media spend may not add much value.
The advertiser needs to know whether the placement is creating new demand, new customers or genuinely incremental conversions.
ORBIT. TODAY’s TAKE
Amazon built one of the strongest advertising businesses in the market by understanding what people browse, watch and buy.
Now it is extending that advertising infrastructure into a place where consumers may be deciding what they want in the first place.
That is the important part of this integration.
The strategic question is not simply:
“Can Amazon advertisers buy ChatGPT inventory?”
It is:
“Can Amazon become the media layer connecting its advertiser demand with AI-driven consumer discovery?”
